Obituary

William Pope Wright, 72, passed away at Golden Living Center in Superior on Wednesday, July 22.

Pope was born in Chicago, IL on March 29, 1943, the only child of Genevieve (Weathers) and William Pope Wright, Sr.

He received his early education at Sexton Elementary and Calumet High School, earned degrees from Roosevelt University, Art Institute of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology.

He married Sandra (Bozeman) Cannon on August 3, 1968 and moved with her and daughter, Brynnetta to Muncie, IN, where he worked toward his Educational Doctorate Degree. Pope pursued his love of teaching as a Professor of Art at UW-Superior since 1971. Prior to his career at UW-Superior he was a Junior High teacher at Lewis-Champlin in Chicago, a Doctoral Fellow at Ball State University in Muncie, IN and taught for one year at Florida Keys Community College.

Pope Wright was loved by many as a respectful, loving, helpful, caring, knowledgeable man who loved books, music, art, friends and family.

He was predeceased by his parents, several aunts, including a special aunt, Carolyn Arnell of Rochester, NY, uncles, cousins and in-laws.

He will be missed by his wife of almost 47 years, Sandra; daughter, Brynnetta Benner, son-in-law, Brad Benner and grandson, Brad Benner III all of St. Paul; his extended family, Constance (Philip) Howard, Henry (Pat) Bozeman and Pam Bozeman-Evans of Chicago, Philip(Cynthia) Howard of California; uncle, Charles Arnell of Rochester, NY; cousin, Tom Kelleher of Superior and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, especially the Art Dept. at UW-Superior.

There will be a casual Celebration of Life on Aug. 3, 2015, 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Superior Elks Lodge, 1503 Belknap St., Superior. Alvin 'Chip' Beal will officiate.

Special thanks to Hospice, Golden Living Center, staff of Essentia Health Duluth/Superior and the many friends who helped during his long bout with cancer and Downs Funeral Home that is assisting the family.
